About the Centre for Military Justice
We are a tiny charity that provides much needed help to service personnel and veterans in crisis. Whether they have experienced sexual assault, bereavement, race discrimination or other problems in their service, the CMJ has been able to support and advocate for, advise or represent more than 1500 people since we were set up five years ago. It has been hard work but worth every minute and we are immensely proud of what we have achieved. Originally under our founding chair, Des James, the father of 18 year old Pte Cheryl James who died at Deepcut, and now under retired Brigadier John Donnelly, we are now a busy staff of four.
Some recent examples of our successful casework are here:
- We represented two rape survivors and successfully challenged the MoD’s blanket ban on service personnel being able to communicate with the press or Parliament.
- We represented former Army instructor Cpl Kerry-Ann Knight following the racist and misogynistic abuse she suffered at Harrogate, securing an apology and compensation for her.
- We represent and continue to work with the bereaved family of the late Gnr Jaysley Beck who died after suffering sexual assault and sexual harassment in the Army. Following the inquest, the MoD announced that it would change policy to better deal with sensitive complex service complaints; and the sergeant major who assaulted her has been convicted of sexual assault.
- We are supporting the bereaved family of a paratrooper murdered by the IRA in Northern Ireland in 1991 to secure an investigation into the killing of their brother and son.
In the recent past we have, in addition to these cases and many others, supported dozens of service personnel to give written evidence to Parliament (via the Defence Committee), secured important changes to MoD policy on the handling of service police complaints, supported clients to take part in podcasts or other advocacy and research concerning armed forces culture and we have been designated a ‘super complaints’ body which enables us to make thematic complaints to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary on military policing.
Legal advice is time consuming and expensive. Very few of our clients can afford it. Service personnel are usually not eligible for legal aid, but do not have money to spend on lawyers. We want to be able to continue to provide legal advice and all our services free at the point of need. Raising funds is a constant challenge and we do not have a dedicated fundraiser. We are delighted to have been selected as one of the lucky charities to benefit from the Big Give Women and Girls Match Fund. Any donations received from 8-15 October 2025 will be doubled. Our target is £5000.
